About Hydrozone

History

The original concept of a Hydrozone Water Management Plan came from Peter’s studies at Melbourne University’s Burnley College. Under the guidance of Melbourne University's Geoff Connellan and Peter Symes from the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Peter completed his thesis on “Water Management in Melbourne’s Public Open Spaces”. The thesis was later awarded a national prize for excellence by the Australian Water Association at the 2003 OzWater Convention in Perth.

In response to the need for independent advice on efficient water use in urban landscapes, Peter and David Furphy came together forming Hydrozone Pty Ltd in 2003.

It was our belief that effective management of water resources depended on understanding all aspects of the water cycle from soils to hydraulics to good people management. Using their practical farming backgrounds and their skills in horticulture, irrigation auditing, water recycling, water budgeting and financial analysis they started offering their water management planning services to large urban irrigators.

We have found that Hydrozone fills a niche by bringing together both the supply and demand sides of the water equation. Engineering solutions work best when based on a sound understanding of soils, growing plants and water demand.

Why the name Hydrozone.

A "hydrozone" is a zone in the landscape which contains plants that have similar water requirements. Effective hydrozoning requires an understanding of plants, soils, landscape design, irrigation, drainage, climate and local weather conditions. Through clever use of hydrozones, less water is needed to grow healthy parks and gardens.

So the company is called Hydrozone because it represents our belief in the need for clever integrated solutions to water management.
